The six sleepers

A bed for each way they sleep

The donut

Curled in a tight ring, nose to tail.

Donuts sleep with their back pressed against something. This bed has a soft wall all the way round, and a plush middle to curl into.

Up-cycled foam bolsters go all the way round a soft fiber-fill middle, and the nylon base has a non-skid strip. American Dog designed the enclosed walls as a den-like retreat for anxious dogs.

Furvana™ Round Bolster Bed · from $150

The side sleeper

Flat on one side, legs stretched out.

Side sleepers need room for their legs. It’s a thick, flat cushion of shredded foam right to the edges, so no paw hangs off a bolster.

Shredded foam shapes itself around the body, which is why American Dog makes it as an orthopedic bed for older dogs and dogs with sore hips.

Furvana™ Rectangle Bed · from $105

The belly-up

On their back, paws in the air.

Belly-up sleepers need a wall on each side. Foam bolsters all the way round keep them from rolling out, in waterproof Armor™ nylon.

The zippers hide away from curious teeth, the cover wipes clean, and American Dog makes it for the heaviest scratchers and chewers, and for camping trips.

Armor™ Round Bolster Bed · from $150

The lion

On their belly, chin resting on their front paws.

Lions doze with one ear open. A plump round cushion with no wall to climb over lets them settle in fast, and hop off just as fast.

Shredded up-cycled foam contours to the body, and the ballistic nylon base has a non-skid strip. Spare covers come in every size.

Furvana™ Round Bed · from $95

The flyer

Belly down, front legs forward, back legs out behind.

Flyers stretch out at both ends. A flat rectangle gives them the full length, in tough Armor™ nylon for dogs who flop down hard.

Inside is a blend of shredded memory foam and prime foam that contours to the body, which American Dog designs for older dogs and sore hips. The zippers hide away from curious teeth.

Armor™ Rectangle Bed · from $105

The cuddler

Pressed up against you, or anyone nearby.

Cuddlers sleep best leaning on something. A raised edge on every side is there to snuggle into, even when you aren’t.

It’s lighter than the round bolster beds, so it’s easy to move from room to room, and the liner inside resists moisture.

Furvana™ Cloud Bolster Bed · from $69
Choosing a bed

More to think about

Get the size right

Weight is a good place to start: our size guide lists the weights each size suits. To be sure, measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while they sleep, and pick a bed at least that long. If they’re between sizes, or sprawl out when they sleep, size up. Large and XL dogs especially need room to stretch their legs without hanging off the edge.

Older dogs and sore joints

Older dogs, and dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia, stiff muscles or a healing injury, need a bed that supports them. Look for thick, contouring foam that doesn’t flatten under their weight, so hips and elbows never reach the floor, and a low edge that’s easy to step onto.

The Furvana™ Rectangle Bed and Armor™ Rectangle Bed are flat to the edges, with 3 to 5 inches of shredded foam that American Dog designs for older dogs and sore hips. If your dog struggles to get up or lie down, talk to your vet: a good bed helps, but it isn’t a treatment.

Dogs who run hot

Plenty of big dogs get a lovely new bed and still sleep on the kitchen tile. Often it’s because the floor is cooler. If your dog keeps choosing the floor, try a low, flat pad with a smooth nylon top instead of plush fleece, like the Armor™ Crate Pad. Dogs who sleep belly up are often cooling off, too.

Diggers and chewers

Some dogs dig, scratch and circle before they settle, and some chew whatever they sleep on. Armor™ beds are 1680D ballistic nylon all over, with zippers hidden away from teeth. No bed is chew-proof, but Armor™ is the toughest choice we carry.

Allergies and sensitive skin

Dogs with allergies or sensitive skin do best with bedding that’s easy to keep clean. Every bed here has a cover you can take off and machine wash, which keeps dust, dander and odors down, and a spare round cover means there’s always a clean one on the bed. Our care guide explains how to wash each one.

Little dogs

Does your little prince or princess like a special place of their own? Small dogs often love a bed with walls: a soft hideaway to curl up in, like the Small Furvana™ Round Bolster Bed, or the X-Small Furvana™ Cloud Bolster Bed, with an edge to rest their chin on.

Questions

My dog sleeps more than one way. Which bed?
Go with the shape you see most at night, once they’re deeply asleep. Naps on the couch don’t count.
My dog is between sizes.
Size up. A bed that’s a little big gets slept on; one that’s too small gets slept next to.
Will my puppy outgrow it?
Probably. Size for the weight they’ll grow into, or start with a smaller bed and size up later.
Still not sure?
