A side sleeper lies flat on one side with their legs stretched out. Plenty of dogs sleep this way once they’re relaxed and settled in, and it takes more room than any other position.
What a side sleeper needs is room: a bed long and wide enough for their legs, with nothing in the way. A bolster all the way round leaves their legs hanging over the edge.
What to look for
- A flat surface right to the edges: a rectangle, a mattress or a rug bed, with no wall where their legs go.
- Enough length and width for them stretched out, legs and all.
- Even support under the whole body: thick foam, or memory foam for an older dog, so hips and shoulders don’t sink to the floor.
Getting the size right
Measure your dog asleep on their side, from the nose to the base of the tail for the length, and from their back to the tips of their paws for the width. Pick a bed at least that big, and between sizes, size up. Each bed’s sizes are on its page and in the size guide.
